I had the opportunity to fish the ABT Wag Tail Soft Series during a couple trips this fall. Some things I liked right away were the quality paint job, realistic eyes, lifelike appearance and profile. The Wag Tail also features an eye behind the dorsal fin and an eye on the belly for attaching stinger hooks. The size of the bait should make it a good tool for tournament anglers and offer big fish potential as well. The swimming action is very similar to that of a Hudd and appears to swim well at all speeds. I was very impressed with the look of the Wag Tail in the water. The lure sinks slowly and will want to shoot towards the surface on the retrieve, similar to the BaitSmith.

One concern I had right away was the small gap between the hook point and the back of the lure. Just by looking at it I could see the potential for fish to not get pinned very well or come unbuttoned fairly easily. However, I spoke to Allen at ABT recently (great guy by the way) and he said that they have raised the stock hook up an 1/8 of an inch on the newer models and this has alleviated the problem. Another thing he mentioned is in the near future they will be offering a model with a faster rate of fall. I was excited to hear this as it should make the Wag Tail a great tool for structure fishing and deeper applications.

I did noticed that the paint on the back of one of my lures seemed to peel off fairly easily. By no means, though, has it drastically affected the appearance of the lure. The $30.00 price tag is right on par with the Baitsmith and Huddleston. You can be assured you are purchasing a quality bait, in my opinion.

Most importantly, the Wag Tail got bit well and I landed some quality fish on the lure, both largemouth and smallmouth. I am definitely going to purchase a handful of the newer models with the improved hook and faster rate of fall.

I'm willing to spend $30 on a bait that could cash a big check in a tournament or catch a better quality fish. That $30 bait could make 100-1000 times what it initially cost you. If you don't fish tournaments then it could be that one bait that the bigger bass want that day. Do you complain about a 3" Lucky Craft Pointer that cost $16?

I recently received a shipment of the new and improved ABT Wag Tail Soft Series swimbaits. I must say that I am extremely impressed with the improvements. In the first batch of baits I purchased I felt the stock hook could have offered a little more gap. The hook on the newer baits has been raised up an 1/8 of an inch or so and now offers what I consider to be the perfect gap for this size and style of swimbait. Not to mention the hook is sharp and very stout. My hat goes off to ABT for listening to the suggestions of anglers and making the modifications accordingly.

The only other issue I had with my initial batch was the paint on one of my baits seemed to peel off fairly easily on the back. This issue has obviously been addressed and the new paint jobs on these baits are very impressive. I rubbed one of my new baits vigorously and there is definitely a vast improvement over the original as far as durability is concerned. Even when I applied a significant amount of pressure, the paint didn't budge. Not only does the integrity of the paint seem to have improved considerably, the paint jobs look even more lifelike and the colors are more brilliant than before.

I now have even more confidence in the Wag Tail going into this season. I have a good feeling quite a few big largies and smallies will fall victim to this lure in '08.

Way to go, ABT!

I'm a little perplexed as to how they can charge $1 more than the hudd for their 7.5" ?

I agree $30.00 is asking a little too much for a 6" softbait.

I, too, am a big fan of the Huddleston. The Hudd is a quality swimbait and I have nothing but positive to say about the bait's construction and performance. I own quite a few myself. In my opinion, I feel the quality of the ABT is right there with the Hudd. The price point of the ABT Wagtail Soft Series is within a couple dollars of the Huddleston (both sizes) and within a dollar of the Baitsmith in the 6" size. Neither of these three swimbaits are cheap but I don't think the ABT price is out of bounds.

One feature I really like on the Wagtail is the eye right behind the dorsal fin for attaching a stinger hook. This feature alone adds some value, in my opinion. This makes rigging a stinger hook so easy a guy up in Washington State can do it.....

I have gotta disagree on the paint. I bought a few of the 6" baits right when they came out and if you even looked at them wrong the paint would rub off.

The moment my 6" hudds showed up I ebayed every Baitsmith and ABT I owned. Ken just builds a better bait, and he built it first. As far as the 7.5" goes, you have got to be kidding, .99 cents more than the bait it is copying and inferior paint to boot!

What's up, Fourbizzle. I agree with you on the durability of the paint jobs on the first versions of the soft Wagtail baits. They definitely needed to be improved.

That's why I posted an updated review on the new version of the Wagtail. There is a night and day difference between the old paint jobs and the new paint jobs. The 7.5" bait also features the new paint job.

I have several 6" Hudds as well. I plan on giving both lures a good workout this year. I will share my experiences later this season on performance, durability, etc.

Well at least they changed it up, because those first ones were POOR! I guess there just isn't a spot for them in my box.

Tag, you're the man! Those smallies you have blow me away! My brother goes to school in bellingham, might have to come up for a visit!}(

F to the B,

Hit me up if you make it up this way. There are a couple excellent smallmouth lakes right here in Bellingham. You are welcome aboard the Skeeter anytime.

Have a great weekend!

i understand the paint quality has been improved, but is there a way to protect the body during and after use? im not trying to keep these baits forever, but i would like to maintain some type of quality as i tend to abuse my lures in the water .

also are there any particular colors you can recommend, as im looking for a kokeanee pattern, but i dont know which one closely resembles that.

:)

thanks

T-Dot,

In my opinion, the black hitch color is probably the best kokanee imitation that is currently offered in the ABT Wagtail Soft Series. Shasta trout is another option.

I would recommend Mend-It to repair any tears
