I have an old Penn Long Beach Sea Reel #65... Anyway, I live in Hermosa Beach, CA, and I want to start fishing the local beaches, piers, coves, etc. I'd like to set this reel up with a good rod and start fishing. But, I'd like to know what kind of fishing this reel is designed for, and if you have some suggestions on the type of pole I should use. Thanks, Marco
Marco, I believe the long beach and seaboy reels were designed for trolling. I know the newer ones have a 3.5:1 gear ratio, but I'm not sure about the old models. The 65 holds 350 yards of 30 lb. which is fine for fishing most species inshore and out at the islands. I've never fished with a long beach, but I have done some work on a couple. How do they cast? If they're made for trolling, probably not too great. It'll probably be best off on a livebait setup. It would be a great rockfish reel. There are many archived discussions about what rods to buy. Check the tackle board. Calstar, G Loomis, Seeker and old Sabres are all good choices. -Brian
The reel you speak of is ancient and a cheapie, yes its good but very slow Try visiting Petes tackle 21 pier ave hermosa beach. He is knoweledgeable and close to you. mention me if you like Jerry esten
I just got an ocean rig using the Penn Long Beach. The rod I have is a 7'0" Shimano Talavera. Wilderness Outfitters set me up (www.centralcoastbass.com).
