Sorry about the late report Folks. But after much consideration I decided to post about the great time we had yesterday despite the ridicule that some seem to be inflicting on those taking advantage of a great time. Well enough on that that! Had my buddy Ken aka Captain Caffeine meet me at my place here in Ventura at 3:30am, our plan of attack was to go child abusing down between Dana point and Oceanside, on our way down we picked up another one of my buddies Ned in Redondo beach. We arrived promptly at 6:00am and despite the busy ramp we were in the bait line shortly there after. Bait was ok chovies, and we decide to take two tanks full so we would have plenty of chum for later (good call) My question is, why only one guy scooping bait when there are 20plus boats in line waiting? The up side he was very generous with the bait! So we ran down to some numbers I got from Big Hook Up Steve from the day before, and didn’t see much so we put out a couple cd11 rapalas while looked around and it didn’t take long before I hear the hook up cry! And this thing was pullen! So when Kenny gets this thing to the boat it might of went an honest 5lbs! Then shortly after we spots some birds picking about a half mile away, so we run up and start brailling bait, and it wasn’t long before we start getting boils around the boat! I was the first to hook up on the 6lb spinning gear, yes that’s right I brought my surfperch gear (a shimano cps76m rod with a sedona 2000f reel) which turned out to be a blast! Although we lost more than we landed on this rig (angler difficulties) Anyways we spent most the day running around chasing the birds, and ended up landing 15 fish and losing another 8-10 on the light gear, unfortunatly the biggest fish was 7lbs But I must say the fish were unbelievably strong for their size! And I honestly did not see a fish that went ten pounds come over a rail of any boat. People might want to weigh their fish before they call them ten pounders, but they definitely are pullers. Six to 12lb line max if you go, we caught most of our fish on the chovies but we did get a few on on the 5” Big Hammers in the silver sardine color on the last stop. Very fun stuff, especially if you take the light gear!….Larry
