On Sunday Tim and I went to the Wharf. We got there shortly after sun-up and IT WAS COLD! There was Ice on everything. We set out the crab ring near the end of the parking area and tied on Sabiki rigs to try to catch some bait. I walked the whole peir trying to find a school of bait and talking to everyone fishing to try to determine any good spots. When I stopped at the bait shop/boat rental the guys in there said 3 Hali's had been caught from the beach up from the peir and 1 had been caught from the peir that they knew of. I wanted to try swimbaits off the beach so I went back to where Tim was to get the gear. When I got there he was slightly bendo on what turned out to be a Kingfish. I looked in the water and saw a school of baitfish, so I threw my Sabiki at them and all it did was scare them. Next we pulled the crab trap to find 3 small crabs and 2 or 3 starfish. After a while Tim got a Sardine on the Sabiki and I put it out on a bottom rig for nothing. After about a 1/2hr I checked it and the crabs had got to it. We kept getting Kingfish and Jacksmelt on the Sabikis tipped with shrimp or squid. Since Tim didn't have a license yet, he didn't want to hit the beach and I didn't go either. I did get one good hit underneath the peir on a Hair-raiser tiped with a squid strip. Our final count was 6 Jacksmelt, 18 Kingfish, 1 Sardine, and more starfish in the crabnet than I care to think about.
