I release most of the calicos I catch but I do keep some. I'll only keep some if either I have no frozen fish or I desire a little calico bass on the table. I may get a little heat for this from some people, because of the extremely slow growth rate of kelp bass, but I don't really see anything wrong with the occasional taking of a very limited number of 13-18 inch fish. After all they are a sport fish that gets whacked HARD by party boats and they do taste pretty good (though they aren't as good as tuna).

I decided not to keep any more fish from Palos Verdes though as I found out that it is pretty much infested with the decades old chemical DDT (ugh, I hope I don't get brain cancer). I hate the fact that that stuff was dumped in the ocean as I'm sure everyone else who knows about it does too.
