#14126, "Yellowtail Limits, Yellowfin and Dorado (the trilogy)" Sat Aug-12-06 02:24 PM by MrTree
Fished on the New LoAnn out of Pt. Loma on an overnighter on Thursday. Fished about 60 miles south of San Diego. Started out the morning and picked off a few on the kelp paddies. Fishing was slow in the afternoon but picked up a few here and there.
In the afternoon, it was almost time to split for home. I was pleased that I had 8 fish including yellofwin, yellowtail, and dorado (the trifecta) and fished the hole day fly lining the sardines on 30 lb.
The captain said we'd stop at a kelp paddy if we saw one in the next 30 minutes. Before I knew it, he came on the loud speaker again and said he saw the "mother of all kelp paddies." Once we stopped, every rod instantly went bendo. The bite lasted for a little over an hour and it was an instant hookup on the yellowtail on every single cast - unbelievable- totally WFO. People who were previously skunked now had fish - it was awesome.
The 3 Yellowfin I got were small, I got a couple of nice dorado around 15 lb. and a limit of yellowtail up to 15 lb. What a day.
Final fishcount for 33 anglers was: 32 Dorado, 52 Yellowfin Tuna, 165 Yellowtail
Great time to get out there on an overnighter - go now!
