Went out on the overnight boat Legacy out of Long Beach Sportfishing on Sunday. There were 21 Anglers on board. The boat is 65 foot and has a huge bait tank. The operation is being ran much like the San Diego based boats. The galley offered several different types of food, in addition to the normal hamburgers. The lunch special was giant wet burritos. The crew was very good and was on top of everything. The boat rode nice and I slept like a baby. I usually dont sleep very well on boats.
There were several boats at San Clemente Island. The bite on the yellows has been later in the morning. They are schooling in deeper water and the boats have been drifting for them. The boats with live squid are naturally doing the best. We had sardines. In the morning we anchored on a couple of spots. The first biters came through. I think there were four hook ups all lost. I got sawed off. While on the anchor I hooked a real nice one on a Penn 965 and 15lb test. I got rocked right now. We drifted a spot of puddlers and we caught several. I got a nice one about 18-20 pounds as did my partner. We ended up with 12 real nice yellows for 21 anglers.
The owner/operator Gary Norby is a very nice man. He really knows what he is doing. I recommend this boat, and am looking forward to fishing on it again. Gary says he specializes in 1 1/2 day charters to Cortez bank for yellows and tuna. Sounds like a trip we should work on. I believe it was a $165 for 24 people. Start finding people Brian we could be catching Bluefin in October!
