#896, "Goleta Beach Sep 24"

Today was beautiful. Sunny, warm, no wind, no swell, lots of people out in kayaks, boats, and surfing the 1 foot breakers. I went out at dawn and immediatly started picking up short halibut. I moved towards campus point and got some calicos and WSB. I noticed some big (surely legal) WSB boiling on bait about 100 yards from me. I could see their big black backs up out of the water as they scooted along the surface chasing down 8" sardines. They were ready to go down, so I started kicking over there in my tube as fast as I could. Just before I got into casting range, these Barnies saw them boiling, fired up their outboard, and literally tried to run some of the fish over with the keel of their boat in an attempt to get as close as possible to the action.

Needless to say, they stomped the feeding fish down to the bottom of the sea and gave the huge ones I was salivating over lockjaw. I was so pissed I couldn't restrain myself from shouting a bit. Oh well. I did manage to snag 2 twenty something WSB right in front of them while they got squat. That almost made up for it....

I ended up with 4 short halibut, 4 calicos, and 6 WSB, one of which looked to be just legal but spit the hook right in front of me. (BTW, I haven't regretted stepping up to 15lb test...I think everyone's right, they can't see it.)
