#308, "May 30, 2000 SB Harbor"

Somehow a 3 day weekend became a 4 day weekend last weekend so since I was in town I figured I would check out the harbor. Met Brian around 6pm and we fished our way from the bait dock to the pier and back. On the way down I caught 2 flatties that both went 21" and lost another one. Not bad but not legal either. At the pier we met up with Pete who was doing ok on the shorty halibut and even a couple small seabass that were hanging around the pylons. Some other guys were fly fishing in shallow and Pete said they had been doing pretty well earlier although no keepers either. All in all it sounds like a good bite around that area. While we were there Pete caught a pretty decent sand bass and I picked up a little shorty halibut. Ok, so it was getting dark finally so we headed back to the bait barge to try for seabass. I broke out ye olde 5.5" sardine fish trap which we used to do pretty well on for the seabass and after about 15 minutes of casting around the barge got whacked and hooked up a seabass but lost it about 5 seconds into the fight. Maybe 10 casts later I got really whacked and this one went shooting for the channel. After a good fight I boated the fish carefully and measured her out at what must have been 27 and 7/8 inches. The fish was really close to legal and might have gone but I let it go which was cool anyway. That was all the action the 3 of us had at the barge and there were no more bites or hookups for any of us for another 1/2 hour or so before we left.
