#1155, "paso robles ponds- major bass spankin'"

I've been fishing some local ponds out in the sticks on private land with permission. I've had my personal best day in ten years of fishing last weekend- over 50 lbs of bass. My experience with local ponds is that the bass tend to run the same size in each pond. Either there are lots of smaller ones, or fewer larger ones, all of the same size. Anyway, I landed 18 fish, while walking half the shoreline of a small lake. The bass ran 2 to up to 4 lbs. They all bit on dark colored glittery plastics with little weight. The closer the plastics matched the color of the water, the better my luck, with few exceptions. A slooooowww, presentation, working it along the bottom, with lots of slack seemed to work the best. All in all, a great day. I repeated the same number (18), a few days later, on the sunny side of this lake, but the fish ran a bit smaller.

get out there and fish!!!

Andy

Nice job on the pond bass. I love fishing in my friends pond up in cayoucas, but don't do it much as i would like to. Do you know of any ponds down here in San Luis Obispo that would be worth a try? If not, oh well, but it is kinda far to go to lopez or santa margarita to fish for a few hours. Hope to see you out there sometime!

Till Later,
Joel

To fish, or not to fish, what a stupid question!!

I know this is almost heresy(sp?), but if you run into a pond with only tons of small bass (12"ers) keep a few because they might be eating themselves out of getting bigger. If they seem suicidally aggressive, as in 4 or 5 charging down a poorly presented lure, there is probably too much competition for food and keeping a few will let the rest have more food and grow larger. If your pretty much the only fisherman they see and nothing else is eating them, they can stunt.

Tight lines and better fisheries management,
Wade
