#562, "Mini Road Trip"

I usually fish in my tube with a buddy of mine down in either the Malibu or Palos Verdes areas of LA. I fished down in PV about 2 weeks ago and caught 4 calicos, one of them was about 4 pounds, a short WSB, and tail-hooked a 15 pound shovelnose guitarfish...I thought I had the mother of all halibuts with that one on the line!

I just found this site and am seeing that I'm not the only one who gladly accepts the title of "sharkbait". I'm going down to LA to get my tube this weekend am am curious if anyone would like to join me in hitting up some of the reefs a few miles north or Goleta sometime next week. I was thinking of Tajiguas as the primary destination. Anyone know if it gets too oily up there? I haven't fished there yet, but I've heard it holds some lumpy calico bass. I plan to fish plastics primarily, but might bring along some fresh dead squid to use as trailers or whole if the fish are hard to come by. Lemme know if yer interested. (I can drive....)

Frank,
I've never fished tajiguas or naples from a float tube. I don't know if there's anywhere to launch up there, I think it's mostly rocky shore. You might want to consider El Capitan or Refugio for halibut. If the weather's right, (completely flat and no wind) I'd like to give the oil island a shot. It's south of here (santa barbara) just past oxnard. As you drive up here check out the conditions. It's the big man-made island with a bridge going to it. Another option is Goleta Beach, and of course the harbor for seabass, but it's been slowing down lately. I don't do much float tubing for calico bass because I usually fish for halibut and white seabass instead (they're tasty...) but I fish calico on occasion.

Sounds great! I try anywhere, as long as its got some structure around. I've just heard of Tajiguas.... I've also fished some of the sand flats around Santa Claus Lane and have had a friend catch a nice halibut there (maybe 30 inches or so...) a long time ago. Wherever is alright with me. Anyone else can come along as long as you have your own tube, plastics, and a license( I've been checked by the DFG in my tube twice!). Small waves don't bother me as I've tried to go out in waves that were ridiculously too large to get by easily down in Malibu. Do you like to go out really early in the mornin? I'll email you my number.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-19-00 AT 03:10 PM (PST)

I was thinkin' Monday or Tuesday morning. My work is usually really flexible but I've got a meeting Wednesday afternoon and don't wan't that to run into the fishin time if we stay out that long.

I haven't been up to Naples or Tajiguas either, so I think I'll go look for a launch site this afternoon to see what's up. I do want to steer clear of some of the tar though. I went by El Cap earlier this week to check it out but I didn't see much kelp. I remember seeing a boatload of kelp farther West(or northwest) that looked REALLY promising.

Recon info coming later tonight......... Also, you can check out the topo at that site I read about on someone's post:

http://www.topozone.com

Just search California for Tajiguas to find the general area.

...time passes....

Ok, here's what I found. You can get feel for it here:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34.4541&lon=-120.0923&s=25&size=m

There are 2 places to park and launch. 1st is down at the end of a small road That comes off the 101. From there it is only a 100-yard stroll to the beach past a fence. You have watch your footing down a sloped embankment, but it isn't tough. Looks really nice, but kinda exposed if the swell is bigger.

2nd is east a half-mile. There is a turnout right off the southbound 101 that overlooks a cove and point that might be good. If you were to go around the point, you'd get to the first spot. There is a lot of kelp between these spots. It starts at the point.

I'm thinkin Tuesday morning... Lemme know if you guys can make it then.
