Float tubed Haskell's Beach this morning. Tide was a little lower than I prefer and I couldn't wait around for the high tide at noon. I made the best of it. Conditions were pretty good, calm weather, semi-clear water, and not too many weeds. Fished the 3 and 5 inch Big Hammers and Fastrac for a while for nothing. About an hour and a half into the day I was slowly working the 5 inch Hammer (silverside color) with a 1/2 oz. jig head along the bottom in a sandy alleyway between some stones & kelp. Got a nice tap but there was nothing there. I checked my bait to find some nice, deep rake marks. A couple more casts in the same area and it happens again - nothing there again - but my bait is even more torn up. A few more casts and I get another solid strike, this time there was pressure. I set the hook and for a moment thought I was snagged... until it starts to move... slowly. After a nice long fight I was disappointed to see that what I thought was going to be a big halibut was a huge (probably pushing 6 ft.) Angel Shark. I tried numerous times to get my bait back but that thing had one of the nastiest, scariest mouths I have ever seen on a fish and eventually I figured it just wasn't going to happen so I snapped it off. This was my second Angel Shark ever but the other one wasn't nearly as big and I don't remember the extending jaws trying to bite my arm off!
Fished for about an hour after that and managed two short halibut on the 3 inch Sea Wolf colored Big Hammer.
