#11949, "North Jetty and Fifth Street Beach 4-27-04 Surffishing"

Time: 9:30- 3:00pm
Bait: Pastic in Motor Oil/Red Flakes of Kalin and Big Hammers.
Summary:
Started out the day in the North Jetty Beach by the Rudder room...using plastic and motor oil/red flake-Kalin, nightcrawlers...caught one legal size crab and a baby halibut.
Since things were slow and got a little crowed moved on to Fifth Street to finish up the day. Was very surprised how the perch were still spawning and how the fat females were eating up the grubs with motor oil/red flake. Also met two other guys that I hadn't seen in a while.....both experts in surffishing...one of the gentlemen makes his own plastic and he suggests to make your own he does well catching corbinas at the Harbor. The other gentlemen was telling me about sandcrab traps last year and he made his own from Jamacian wood that he brought back from there. The surprise for him was that he was admiring my Shimano and gave compliments on how well it is made...he makes custom rods. He was using sand crabs that he caught. Hopefully next time I will take my sandcrab trap out now that the crabs are showing face. For his effort he caught a 13 1/2 inch perch off a dime size sand crab..congrats to him. Now back to me... I was straight fishing with grubs...forgot the scent at home but they sure were hitting.....sizes were from 4inches..most 7-8 inches...largest i caught today was 9 3/4 inches. If you guys are fishing in Ventura County for Perch using sand crabs or grubs hit Fifth Street...
