My partner Yutaka Suganuma and I fished the Second Annual Newport Bay Tournament hosted by FishingHotPage.com on Saturday, 3/24. We launched my 15 Gregor, Bassomatic, at 5:30 am and were fishing our first spot by around 6 am. We were able to fish two patterns simultaneously, I was pitching grubs at docks and pilings while Yutaka was fishing swimbaits to cover open water. We used a mix of 4 inch Big Hammers, 5 inch Assalt grubs and a few of the hard to find Wham lures. As it was overcast, we stuck to mostly darker colors. We started off by hooking and breaking off our first 3 keepers. We soon got our act together in the 63.5-64 degree water and ended up with 17 legal spotted bay bass which we culled from for our winning four-fish stringer of 7.2 pounds. This netted us $100 for the win. We also tied for the big bass prize with a 1.9 pounder which earned us a free one-day tuna trip. 27 teams comprised of 56 people turned out in the overcast weather. A great day in some calm water.
