Haven't been fishing the salt in a while but with little success bassing at Casitas, I tried Ventura Harbor last Sunday. Threw plastics on the bottom using Rob's "3-cranks, pause" retrieve and the steady grind but no bass, halibut or WSB. Got a few ticks on a white fluke; looked like something pulled the tail. Went to the 1/2 oz flecto-tape Kroc and caught 20 short barracuda (almost a fish per cast). Coulda had more but I left my un-hookers in my truck so it took more time to get my lure free. Must be a 'cuda nursery in this harbor. Small fish but fun to get some pole action. I'm about a week away from having installed a sonar on my kayak and plan to be back on Casitas soon.

I am in the market for a sonar unit for my kayak. I always fish the bay for flatties and the sorts. I also fish Santa Margarita alot. Are you installing a portable? What brand do prefer? If you could let me know a little more about it I would appreciate it. thanks

I bought a Humminbird Wide One Hundred. It's going to be portable hard mount(?). I made a rack for my boat, got a small rechargeable battery and portably mounted the transducer. It's not the all-in-one portable. Being a family man, price was the primary consideration. If you wanna email me offline, I'll give ya more details. Or if you're in no hurry, Rob said he might let me do an article. Tip: Consider the depths you fish when you choose. A narrow beam transducer shows only a small patch of bottom in shallow h2o. If I remember my math it is: tangent (O/A) of 1/2 the cone angle x depth x 2 = diameter of covered area.
