#6039, "does muddy water and rain delay spawn?"

it has been raining a ton these past couple weeks and making the ponds and resiviors really muddy

i was wondering if these weather patterns would delay spawn.

I havent been able to get anything from these muddy ponds and its concerning me

Ben,
Yes it does! I had cought many spanwing fish last year in march but this year very few I think they will be comming back up as soon a the rain clears out for a few days. Try a Black/Blue jig or some bulkier dark colored bacits and mabey you can get some of those muddy water bass. PS single colorado spinnerbaits are also good.

at TWH i just ordered 130$ worth of swimbaits so i cant wait!!!!!!

If there is little cover crawl your jig at a medium speed and if you hit something stop the jig and work it slow for a while no hits keep going this works great for me! Even if you cant see any cover more than likley there is at least a little bit.

The water clarity isn't really a factor, but the rain is. The spawn depends a lot on water temp and hard rains will bring the water temp down. Also even if they do start spawning if it begins raining and the water level goes up dramatically they could abandon their beds.

I agree with ccalcat its not the muddy water itself but the weather that creates the muddy water than can deter the fish from a spawn.when you see that has occured try to find a secondary spot just outside the beds and the bass may just be there waiting to come back.
tight lines,safe waters,
Brian

Hey Ben if you don't have a meter with Water temp get yourself a pool thermometer and that will give you a close idea to what's going on. Most cases from what I've seen out here the bass will start around 58-62 degrees. Smallies are a little earlier, maybe 55 or so.

Hope for sunny days and look for spots with lots of rock or grass, those spots will hold the heat a little longer. Also look for the spots in muddy water where the sun shines on it most of the day.I fished a pond in central CA that was 50 when we started in the morning and warmed up to 55 in 3 hours, that's when the bite turned on. Flip to win and good luck!

yeah i have a probe digital thermometer that i measure the ponds with and the temps are about 43-49 degrees so that is obviously the big reason for my shortcomings, but i already have two maryland trophy bass and the water temp hasnt broke 50!!!!!

thanks for all the help and your muddy water tips will definantly come in handy

BEN

wednesday might actually work cause i get a short day in school thanks for the info, i hadnt checked the weather yet!

god bless

went fishing today after haveing about 4 inches of rain over the past week

today the temp jumped to 85 degrees!

and the water temp spiked to about 60 from 46 a week and1/2 ago!!!!

i was all excited and went to a nearby pond after skool

and what do ya know!

a mud puddle!!!!

i fished 3 hours hard using every muddy water technique, and kept bumping into bass in the shallows, but they were just tooo spooked to even take a shot at any of my lures

man if the water was clear they would have been amazing from that water temp jump!
i havent had one trip where the water was clear and above 45 degrees, i just hope there still gonna be in pre spawn!!

well anyway, i still cant beat the mud puddle waters!!!!!!!!

ben

god bless
