#8632, "Shelter island, 1-4-03"

5:00 - 9pm
Steve, myself, and a lurker 'round here launched in a stiff breeze and a nice sunset. Lurker and I paddled to the south end of the Island and had a very slow drift into the wind (it changed direction after we stopped paddling). Got one legal on a tube for that hour drift. Things woke up when started tossing a brown and orange Tightline zippershad. It's a 6" zipper w/ a swimbait tail. Sweet bait, 7 legals in about an hour. With those baits gone I switched to the Edhog for 2 more keepers, including my best for the night, a 3+. The next hour + saw an end to the bite, why I don't know, the current was still there. Pulled a few shorts on a tube, and finished my last drift with a short and another legal on the Edhog. Steve finished with 11, and lurker had 1.

Conditions overall were good, wind died after sunset, water was about 60ยบ. Air temp was much nicer than last week, I actually sweated for a while. Boat traffic was bad for the first 2 hours or so, but that died too. Got Q-beamed by the CG as they guided a cruiseship out to sea. Current was smokin' most of the night, but you had to find the areas where it was moving good. Most fish were in 40-50', but deeper would probably held bettter. It's just too sketchy in the yak at night, to go out in the middle. All but one of the legals were 2+.

Still not up to last year's barnburners, but still fun.
